Are they made from real Girl Scouts?

Oh, Girl Scout cookie time. It comes every year, and some people purchase a couple of boxes or maybe a boatload that they stockpile for the year. However, this year I said no — for my own well-being. It felt great. Empowering, really.

My coworker sent me an email stating that her daughter is selling the cookies. I responded with this:

I LOVE SAMOAS!!!!!!!!!! However, last year when I ordered from [your daughter], I proceeded to eat nearly an entire box in one sitting. Haha! Oops! It's probably best if I just don't order them :) Let me know if your kids ever do a nonfood fundraiser and I'm in!

It’s that easy! I was beaming after I hit send. Yay me!

Last year I ordered a couple of boxes and had intentions of only eating a cookie or two when I needed a sweet after dinner every once in awhile. I even put them in the freezer so that I’d need to let the Samoa thaw before devouring. Yeah, that technique didn’t last. I almost broke a tooth eating a frozen cookie because I JUST COULDN’T WAIT.

Then the madness ensued. I brought the entire box with me to the couch and mindlessly ate cookie after cookie until two of three rows had vanished. Did I even enjoy them?? Maybe the first cookie, but really, two rows? Probably not. So not worth it.

Lesson learned: Just don’t have them in the house.

I won’t ban them from my life because I don’t believe in banning foods or entire food groups. If I happen upon a Samoa at work or something, perhaps I’ll treat myself to one, but it’s really not important to me.

I’m approaching this Girl Scout cookie situation similar to my practice of not keeping chips or salty snacks in my home. If they’re in my cupboard, I’ll eat ’em like crazy; if they’re not, I won’t! I eat fruit or a minibag of popcorn and don’t feel like crap about it later. Call me a genius :) Ha.

I saw that picture on failblog.org and immediately thought of the scene from The Addams Family movie when Wednesday and Pugsley are selling lemonade.

Girl Scout: Is this made from real lemons?
Wednesday: Yes.
Girl Scout: I only like all-natural foods and beverages, organically grown, with no preservatives. Are you sure they're real lemons?
Pugsley: Yes.
Girl Scout: Well, I'll tell you what. I'll buy a cup if you buy a box of my delicious Girl Scout cookies. Do we have a deal?
Wednesday: Are they made from real Girl Scouts?

Hahaha love it! Probably my favorite part of the flick.

This post sure did run away from me, huh? Well, at least I stuck to a theme and got to reminisce a little :)

I wish you luck on your Girl Scout cookie endeavors! What’s your gameplan?

  2. Yes... I too had to disappoint 3 girl scouts who came as a group to our door. I said..."you got us at a bad time, we're all on diets!" I at least asked my wife if she wanted to buy any as gifts for people. No sale...and that is fine with me.

I should say, though, that I was thrilled that they were actually going through the effort of selling door to door. At work, in our lunch room, are several sign-up sheets that parents have brought in. A lesson for the girls is forfeited.

If you ask me, they should sell them in the grocery stores and let the girls learn the art of merchandising, shelf-space, post-of-sale advertising, vendor managed inventory, etc...and it would be safe too.

  3. *point-of-sale advertising...damn typos.

  5. I'm actually a little sad, no one has come to my door to get me to buy some! I was big into selling them when I was young. My husband bought some, though, and I didn't even have one. I knew I would be eating it just to be eating it, and they would be gone by the time I was really craving one!

  6. Oh I LOVE the Samoas! Love the response though

  7. No active girl scouts around here...thank God!! But thin mints and samoas make my mouth water.

  8. Oh my gosh, I totally know what you mean. I work for a Ronald McDonald House, and at least where I work, the local Girl Scouts are affiliated with us. Which means every spring dozens of troops bring more cookies than anyone could eat in a year. We still have boxes from last year. I can also attest to eating a whole box. Of those lemon creme ones. Worst stomachache ever. At least we won't be doing that this year. =)

  10. Thank god I am in Germany for the next 3 years so I am free of breaking little girls hearts!

  11. My little one is a Brownie so Yes, Girl Scout cookie order is running amuck. What I did last year, was ordered several boxes under their donation portion. You can support the troop with the purchase but the cookies go to a local food bank. Win Win

  12. What a fantastic response! I will have to remember to just say No this year! I'm like you, it's just best not to have them in the house at all.

  13. You need to check but I think you can buy girl scout cookies and let the troop donate them for you - I'm not sure where they get donated too though but it's a thought if you want to support girl scouts but not eat them ;-)

  14. That's a great email that you sent to your coworker! A lot of people at my work do fundraisers that are cookie, candy and other junk food type based and I never partake because really the last thing I need is cookie dough or jalepeno poppers in my freezer!! My plan is the same as yours.. I will allow myself to eat one if someone wants to share but I certainly won't be purchasing any of my own!

  15. Great job!! I'm in the same boat and love somoas, but turned them down this year for my health. This year, I'm all up for the fundraisers that involve, wrapping paper, candles, etc..

  16. Good job! I also just don't order them. I can't have them around the house so it works out better not to even buy them!

  17. Way to go! I've been living abroad for the last few years so I'm used to not having those delicious Girl Scout cookies. This year I'm home and was thinking about buying some, but you've encouraged me to just say no! Thanks!!

  18. hahaha. i know the feeling girl.
I am totally convinced that Samoas are the devils food.
That takes willpower not to eat those things!
I am fortunate that I know no one selling them!

  19. I tried the freezer trick, only to find that I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Thin Mints frozen!! So that little plan didn't work out so well! Now I just avoid them. There are some here at work, but like you said, not really worth it. If I feel as though I am gonna break and have one...I just read the fat and calorie count for a serving....that usually just shocks me into numbed silence back to my desk! :P Not the greatest plan, but so far so good!

  20. Yup, I do the same - avoid having stuff like that in my house.... there's even things that aren't "bad" for me but I still can't keep in the house because I will devourer a whole box in one sitting, like wheat thin crackers....

I try to just avoid buying stuff like that at all costs, it’s better for me and my pants!

  21. Keeping foods like girl scout cookies out of the house completely is something I have to do as well. For me it's not even about the will power, although it IS really hard to resist. But when trying to eat foods for their nutrition, what role do girl scout cookies play in that? None...they just taste good. And even though they taste good, fueling my body with good food tastes better.

  22. Girl Scout season is tough for me too! Especially when they sit by the entry of grocery stores and have all those colorful cookie boxes ready for people like me!!! Love the movie quote!

  23. Normally don't buy them - but Zliten brought home a box of thin mints this year. They were my faves but I'm honestly just not tempted to sit down and eat a box of cookies. I've had one in the last week.

Salty snacks used to be my weakness (and still can be at times), but I've gotten pretty good at just taking a serving and when that's done, I'm done. Took LOTS of practice though, and I'm not perfect (ahem, WAAY too many snackies at a party this weekend). But yeah, if you think you might go crazy, better just not to keep them at home.

  24. samoas = amazing. i also passed on ordering them this year for the same reason!

  25. That FAIL is hilarious!

Good on you for knowing your limits and how to face them. Most cookies don't get me, but those totally would. I'm glad we don't have Girl Scout cookies up in Canada. Girl Guide cookies are NOWHERE near as good.

  26. my gameplan? i calculated the Points value of each cookie (and the serving size), and bought one box of the new Carmel kind (1 point each, easy enough to keep track of), and 3 boxes for the troops. although i know i shouldn't. 'cause cookies are totally my trigger food. this morning I had a rice krispie bar after a meeting, and I knew where the extra bars were for the rest of the day, and that afternoon i looked for them... fortunately they were all gone!

  27. We often order 2 boxes and tell them to keep the cookies - they will even give you a donation receipt :)

I can have the cookiess in the house for monhs without wanting them but then I will eat 3-4 and not again for months.

  29. You are looking awesome in your new picture on the right side of the blog. I've said it before and I'll say it again, you are my inspiration! I was at 222 last May. I'm down to 196 now. One day I hope to be down as low as you. 148, wow!!

  30. Oh the girl scout cookies! I love Samoas!!!! Absolutely love them. Coconut, caramel, and chocolate, can't go wrong. I saw an order form at work, almost mindlessly ordered some, and luckily stopped myself realizing that I would likely consume the whole box in one or two days.

  31. I hear ya on the GS cookies. I have a friend, actually the nutritionist who runs the group with which I lost 86 pounds, she asks the girl what her favorite type of cookie is and then when she comes to deliver them, she tells her to keep it for herself. I thought it was a really cute idea.

    Happy Veggieversary!

  32. I couldn't resist, but it means that I will have to be extra good with the rest of my food--and throw in extra workouts--until every box (yes, 2 boxes of Thin Mints and one box of Samoas)is gone. :)I don't buy cookies at any other time of year so I indulge come Girl Scout cookie time. But as always, I admire you!!

  33. My friend and her daughter sold GS cookies outside of Wal-Mart this year. She said the heavier people bought the most boxes. I can't imagine eating a whole box in one sitting.

By the way, you look great. Kudos to you for sticking with the diet...
