Bananas for Bananas

It’s been brought to my attention by Janetha at meals & moves that today is National Banana Lovers Day! I’ve already begun celebrating!!!

I just ate a Banana Nut Vitatop (my fav of all Vitatops), which has a mere 100 calories and 5 grams of fiber. It also has 15 vitamins and minerals, and that sounds good to me!

I’m gonna follow up my muffintop (ha) with my daily banana. I love this fruit so much that I eat one each and every day for breakfast. Another reason I eat them so frequently is that they go bad so quickly after I purchase them. I should really have one of those banana stands that my mom has.

Do those banana stands REALLY keep bananas fresh longer? Let me know if you have any facts on that. Speaking of banana stands brings to mind my favorite TV show: Arrested Development. Any Arrested fans out there? Hollaaaa!
Why does Michael Cera look so sad?
Doesn’t he know it’s National Banana Lovers Day!?

I’ll probably have a banana as my after-dinner dessert, too. I don’t really keep traditional desserty things at home because I might go wild on them, so I always have bananas waiting for me on the counter for when the sweetness urge strikes.

Can someone eat too many bananas? Two a day isn’t bad, right? They’re a good source of vitamin B6, vitamin A, and potassium, and they have some fiber, so I say why not! Better than other snack choices out there.

Well, I mentioned at the end of last night’s post that I hoped my next post would be more focused. It sure is bananarific today! Are you going to incorporate the heavenly yellow fruit into your diet today? If I had a Magic Bullet (hint hint, Mom and Dad … my birthday’s coming up in less than a month and a half …), I would totally make a smoothie with a banana today. What are you gonna have? Go bananas!!!!

That darn Gwen Stafani! GET OUT OF MY HEAD!

Sometimes I go overboard on banana's too. I always wonder if one can overdose on them. I like to eat 2 too! We are twins!

  4. ok have you ever tried make-your-own banana soft serve? all you need to do is cut up some bananas, stick them in the freezer, and once frozen, throw some in a food processor and just let it do its thang. it comes out as an ice cream consistency and you can add some dark choco chips or whatever your heart is feelin! SO yums... :)

  5. you MIGHT be able to eat too many bananas. once when i was on some drug and they did blood work, they thought my potassium levels were too high. some website says "When potassium stays in your blood because your kidneys aren't filtering it out, you may experience weakness accompanied by an irregular heartbeat." Hyperkalemia. but you'd probably have to eat a TON of bananas to get it.
i have my bananas in a green bag right now!
sometimes I feel i could OD on apple stuff.

  7. Haha. Great post and interesting to know there is a national banana day. I never touched the stuff until I was in my 20's. Now I can tolerate them and occasionally have one. :) When is national grapes day? That's one I could really sink my teeth into!

  8. I thought the banana stand was purely decorative and spacially functional? Is it really supposed to keep them fresh? If so, I must get one!

  9. I have heard that it is possible to OD on bananas (potassium) but you have to eat a TON of them to do so. ;o)

And (mostly) off topic - I have the Magic Bullet and it's not as great as I thought it was going to be. It blends well, but I have to shake up the shaker a bit to make sure all the ice is shredded.

  10. My first concern with OD'ing on bananas would be that they can be a bit....you know...binding. Probably not as bad as OD'ing on white rice, I guess!

Love some Arrested Development (though I'm slowly watching them on DVD - my DH was a fan from the start!) and I bet that Mike is sad because it's tough to be a teenage banana.

I have not seen the banana vitamuffins myself - only the cranbran, chocolate and corn ones. I also got some vitamuffin mix that was GREAT and way more cost effective than pre-made muffins, but sadly SuperTarget doesn't seem to carry the mixes anymore. Sigh.

  12. I eat two bananas a day as well. good to know its National banana day. YAYY!!
    I love me some bananas!
Also I think the banana stands help so they dont get bruised so easily as they do when they lay down??? just a thought.
    have a great day Amanda!

  13. The gwen stefani song - um yeah. Totally in my head now. :) It's not my favorite, but the beat REALLY gets me going when I run so it's on a lot of my running playlists.

And bananas themselves...ucky. Never have liked them texturewise and not terribly fond of the taste. However, I can do a piece of banana nut bread now and again...

  14. Banana stand works great. And nothing's better for thickening up smoothies than frozen bananas. We buy tons when they get discounted for being too ripe, then skin 'em and freeze 'em. Outstanding.

Good post. Now I'm gonna make like a banana and leave. ;)
